31. Interesting News Items
Here is a couple of news items reported in the Western Morning News 21/22 Sept related to the Lib Dems conference:
1. WE REPRESENT BEAUTIFUL BRITON. Tim Farron, the party’s rural affairs spokesman, in a bid to secure the rural vote, claims that the Lib Dems have become the party of beautiful Briton.
However
2. THE REGION SHOULD BECOME HOME TO MORE MIGRANTS. The South West should be FORCED to become home to more immigrants, the Lib Dems claimed as they backed regional points-based immigration to ease pressure on the overcrowded South East (of England)
The aim of the system is to encourage immigrants to settle in areas with gaps in population and employment. Party members hope this would ease pressure on services in parts of the country stretched by the inflow from abroad.
Home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne hailed the points based system as a “step in the right direction” although it still failed to offer a “hard-headed assessment of the needs of different regions and parts of the economy” .He said: “Too few are in areas crying out for more population. We need a system that attracts migrants to those areas”
By TA: Could it be that the present party in power and the Lib Dems are working hand in glove on this issue? In Cornwall are being told by the present government that we must have almost 70,000 houses built here, which in many areas will be over and above the already high annual build rate. Is the real reason then to home immigrants from the overcrowded South East of England?
The two statements appear to be a contradiction by saying let’s maintain a beautiful Briton by building an excessive number of houses on it to home immigrants.
As far as the points system is concerned, which they appear to endorse, It would seem that even they don’t know how it will work! So much for forward planning and joined up thinking!
The phrase Wake up and smell the coffee springs to mind.
If you live in an area which is, quote ‘crying out for more population‘ we would be interested to hear where it is.
TA would recommend you contact your local MP (Here in Cornwall at the moment it will be a Lib Dem) and ask for an explanation on how the points system works, is Huhnes’ statement a result of interaction with the idiot scheme of mass building planned in Cornwall. What are the plans by the Lib Dems to expand the infrastructure (Presumably if they intend to encourage migrants into the area they must have a solution to the obvious problem) and importantly, where will the employment opportunities come from?
30. The figures for local need vary depending on which report you read, and these are the so called ‘affordable’ homes. TA fully supports this need, however, the definition of ‘affordable’ in the pricing context appears to be 30% (or so) of the open market value. Therefore in a new estate where the planned sale price on the open market is intended to be £200,000 the small section of ‘affordable’ homes provided by the developer will be in the region of £140,000 - Given that mortgage lenders are looking at loan amounts of some 4 times annual salaries, it means that a potential buyer would need to be earning £35,000 per year to afford to buy one outright.
TA feels that a more sensible approach to ‘affordable’ would be to fix the price of affordability to costs plus a developers profit of 10% and this would mean, assuming the freehold cost of the land and building were to be £80,000 - the cost of the home
